Innovative Bookbinding: Secret Compartment & Hidden Messages by Shereen Laplantz was Shereen’s second major how-to book on bookbinding. The first was Cover to Cover (1998) and the last was The Art & Craft of Handmade Books (2003), both published by Lark Books. Shereen made her final transition on September 11, 2003.
Innovative Bookbinding: Secret Compartment & Hidden Messages is the third re-print edition (long out of print) of a lavishly illustrated artists’ book that originally was handbound containing a secret slipcase holding a second book (on flexigons), another fold had a window with a third book hidden behind it and the final fold had a tunnel. There was even a mechanical as a special finale surprise!
Innovative Bookbinding: Secret Compartment & Hidden Messages was Shereen’s most complex adventure for handbinding. Editions #1 and #2 were originally handbound as 1000 and 2000 copies, respectively, all signed and numbered. Truly, editions #1 and #2 are collector’s items and cherished by their owners for a variety of intellectual and personal reasons. This dynamite 5 1/2″ X 8 1/2,” 103 page, black & white book (no color) is sure to add visual excitement and inspiration to every book artist’s creative thinking, problem solving and production!
This long awaited re-print has been lovingly recreated with a few exceptions. Obviously, for technical and practical reasons, the opportunity did not present itself to handbound this third edition. Every effort has been made to present Shereen’s Innovative Bookbinding book as it was in the first and second editions. In order to capture the excitement of the earlier editions, visually descriptive photographs replace the secret slipcase, the fold with the window, the tunnel fold along with the original mechanical.
Also, new photos were shot of the Horn Books and Leaf Books, fleshing out the visual and historical aspects of these interesting and exciting/enticing books!
