Mail Sorter’s Magic Box

by David LaPlantz ·

One treasure from the cigar box was a small glass vial filled with Lake Erie sand. This was sand from before the time the lake was polluted, pure sand, sand that sensitized the areas between the mail sorter’s toes. He rode his one speed bike to the lake, sat and enjoyed the taste, the sound and the beautiful blue on blue, warm sunny days. He eventually rode from the Toledo, Ohio area to Niagara Falls, New York with another cycling enthusiast. Imagine that type of bicycle trip on big, old balloon tires and one speed gearing?

The Lake Erie sand was only the start of memory vessels the cigar box coveted and protected. Memories and mementos, joggers to the past and presenters of the future…….
