“Tombstone Brooch Series,” Circa, 1986 -1988

by David LaPlantz ·

In 1988, David published his first book, Artists Anodizing Aluminum, The Sulphuric Acid Process. This was the image used on the back cover and displayed six very wearable, anodized and dyed aluminum brooches. The average height of this brooch series was about 2 5/8″. David’s 1985, Fulbright Scholar’s Visiting Artist Gig throughout the North and South Island of New Zealand was the inspiration for this series. He had visited a cemetery in Devonport, across the Auckland Harbor. In the cemetery, he photographed many headstones and one, in particular, stood out and immensely influenced his work for the next coupla years or so.
